TIMBER FRAMING

The craft of timber framing is an age old building method used throughout the world rooted in the strength and simplicity of nature.
It is a process in which trees, having been shaped into various forms of timber, are brought together using mortise and tenon joinery and fastened by wood pegs to create the frame of a structure.

The design, wood species, milling, and joinery decisions are all informed by and tied to the inherent strength of trees. Without the need for metal fasteners, production lumber mills, glue laminated beams, etc., we are able to source our materials from their source…the forest.

We engage in the construction of timber frame homes, barns, accessory structures, etc. We also provide restoration services for historic timber frame structures of all kinds.

We are located in Front Royal, VA and love serving in the local Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia communities. Due to the modular nature of timber frames they are easily transported to any site. This also gives us the ability to bring frames to clients around the region and country.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

Alongside timber framing and woodworking we also offer general contracting services in and around our local area. If your project requires more than just raising a timber frame we can help. We are a class A contractor in the state of Virginia and offer general contracting services in and around the Front Royal area.

ENCLOSURE

We utilize Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) as an enclosure system as well as other methods. Using SIPS offers a high performance thermal envelope that virtually eliminates thermal bridging while providing sheathing and framing elements to attach windows, doors, siding and interior wall coverings. This method eliminates the need for a conventional stud wall and hand stacked roof enclosure which is not only much more labor intensive, but also creates excessive thermal bridging between the conditioned interior of the home and the exterior elements at the location of every framing member. These thermal bridges are a means for heat to either enter the home during the summer months or be released during the winter months making the home much less energy efficient. SIPS can also be installed quite quickly, which makes drying in the timber frame much less stressful knowing that there is much less need to worry about the weather permeating after the frame is raised.

RESTORATION

We see great value in the built heritage of our country and believe that we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the structures that have been handed down to us.

Often times a timber frame building that has been neglected over the years is able to be restored to its former glory. There are also opportunities to re-invent old timber frames, giving them new life in a different building form.

Durability

A structure will not stand for centuries if it is not built with durable materials that are brought together by the hands of a craftsman. Our building past shows us this as timber frames around the world stand today after being crafted and raised by builders many centuries before.

Beauty

Beautiful buildings are appreciated by all and elevate the quality of life of those spending time in and around them. There is something within all of us that is drawn to the beauty of a well designed and well built structure. They do not get torn down if repairs or maintenance is needed, they get restored to their former glory for generations to come to appreciate and be affected by.

Sustainability

In order to continue to build for generations to come we must use sustainable building practices. Allowing our forests to grow at a normal rate and harvesting well grown and mature trees is sustainability in practice. Not only does this allow for high quality timber versus the lumber most homes are built out of today, but it is also healthier for our forests and stabilizing to our economy.
